Ribbon Mixers

S-60 Standard Duty Batch Mixer with Foot Mounted Gear Drive

Davis Ribbon Mixers are equipped with a double-ribbon agitator and will mix hog and poultry feed in only three minutes. They are available with several options to suit your specific application, including scales, gear-drive systems, liquid-fat-handling systems, and various leg and outlet options.

Ribbon mixers are industry-leading batch mixers engineered for rapid, homogeneous blending of powders, granules, and semi-dry pastes. Featuring a counter-flow double-helix ribbon mounted in a horizontal trough, these mixers provide consistent, low-shear mixing that preserves particle integrity while ensuring tight blend uniformity.

Quick FAQ:

Q: Are ribbon mixers suitable for fragile materials? A: Yes—their low-shear action gently blends delicate particles with minimal breakage. Q: How long does a typical batch take? A: Many mixes reach target uniformity in two to 10 minutes, depending on the recipe and scale. Q: Can ribbon mixers handle moisture? A: They handle slightly moist blends; for high-moisture pastes, consider paddle or high-shear mixers.

Why ribbon mixers are awesome:

  • Uniform blending: A double-helix ribbon creates counter-current flow for fast, consistent homogeneity.
  • Low-shear action: Gentle mixing protects fragile or coated particles and minimizes heat generation.
  • High throughput: Fast cycle times and efficient residence distribution reduce batch times.
  • Scalability: Available in sizes ranging from laboratory to large-scale production, with easy scale-up.
  • Energy-efficient: Optimized ribbon geometry reduces motor load and power consumption.
  • Versatile material handling: Works with powders, granules, flakes, and some pastes; compatible with dry and slightly moist mixes.

How ribbon mixers work:

A central shaft carries inner and outer helical ribbons. As the shaft rotates, the outer ribbons push material toward the ends of the trough while the inner ribbons bring it back to the center, producing a continuous counter-flow that uniformly redistributes particles until the target mix uniformity is reached.

Common features to highlight:

  • Double-helix ribbon agitator
  • U-shaped stainless-steel trough
  • Discharge valve types: slide, butterfly, and plug
  • CIP/SIP or sanitary finishes for food and pharmaceutical applications
  • Vacuum or dust-collection ports
  • Lifting and labor-saving loading options, including hoppers and conveyors

Industries and applications:

  • Food: flour blends, spices, seasoning mixes, and powdered beverages
  • Pharmaceuticals: API blends, excipients, and tablet mixes
  • Chemicals: detergents, pigments, and catalysts
  • Plastics and masterbatch: color concentrates and additives
  • Construction: cement additives and dry mortar blends

Davis Heavy Duty Models will mix hog and poultry feeds in only three minutes when equipped with our double-ribbon agitator or our ribbon-and-paddle agitator. All Davis Mixers are available with oversized outlets and a surge tank to increase the number of batches produced per hour.
